This two-color lithograph announces a "Journée Serbe," or Serbia Day, set for June 25, 1916, and it was designed by P. Mourgue to promote the French observance. By mid-1916, Serbia had been overrun by Central Powers forces the previous autumn, and its army had retreated across the mountains of Albania to the Adriatic coast. The poster belongs to a wider wave of wartime French appeals that used public days, posters, and fundraising to support Allied nations and their soldiers. Its subject listing, which names Serbian military personnel and departures, points to the army and the displaced population at the center of that appeal.
