Few wartime posters announce their event as plainly as this one: a large color lithograph, about 95 by 63 centimeters, advertising the Kriegsausstellung, or War Exhibition, held in Vienna in 1916. By then Austria-Hungary was well into the war, and exhibitions like this were a common way for home-front authorities to show citizens military achievements and to build support for continued sacrifice. The poster's subjects also tie it to Vienna's architecture of the 1910s, grounding the message in a real city. Its bold color and lettering reflect the commercial poster style that flourished across Europe during the war.
