Rather than showing the fighting, this 1916 French poster advertises an exhibition of paintings by contemporary masters, a reminder that art still drew crowds while the war raged. Announcements like this were printed throughout the conflict, as museums and dealers worked to keep audiences coming and to present cultural life as continuing despite mobilization and shortages. Wartime posters of this kind are worth a close look at their lettering and layout, which were often produced quickly and on tight budgets.
