Bordeaux, a port city in southwestern France, hosted this 1918 exhibition, titled *L'Art guerrier et art moderne*, or "Warrior Art and Modern Art." The city had served as the seat of the French government for several months in 1914, when Paris was threatened, and it remained a center of wartime activity. The title pairs martial subjects with modern styles, reflecting a common wartime effort to record the conflict while debating new directions in painting and design. Shows of this kind often mixed patriotic scenes with experimental work, presenting both as expressions of the national effort.
