Few posters from the First World War turn to Indian soldiers, and this one does so with a clear purpose: it shows disabled men learning trades at Queen Mary's Technical School in Bombay, where automobile mechanics was a popular course. The captions make the argument plainly, that the loss of a limb does not stop injured soldiers from becoming good carpenters. Issued in 1919 as an exhibit poster, it was part of a wider American effort to show how rehabilitation could return wounded men to paid work, and its focus on India reflects the large number of Indian troops who fought with the British forces.
