Its title casts workers, employers and money as a team in harness, with co-operation named as the strap that will drive the nation to victory. Issued in 1917 by the National Industrial Conservation Movement of New York City, this lithograph by Phifer addresses wage earners in overalls and their bosses alike as soldiers in an industrial army. It appeared soon after the United States entered the First World War in April 1917, when government and business leaders were pressing factories to speed up production. Its mix of wagon-team imagery and military language shows how war output was presented to ordinary workers as a patriotic duty.
