Carved into rose-colored sandstone cliffs, the rock-cut facades in this view are the "excavated mansions" of Petra, the Nabataean capital that Johann Ludwig Burckhardt brought back to European attention in 1812. The scene was sketched on March 7, 1839, by Scottish painter David Roberts, who traveled through Egypt and the Holy Land that year. This color lithograph appeared in 1849 as part of *The Holy Land*, the multivolume series of Roberts's views that gave many readers their first detailed images of the region's monuments.
