Few views of Petra from the 1830s travels have stayed as widely reproduced as this one, which shows the rock-cut tombs carved into the sandstone cliffs of the ancient Nabataean capital in what is now southern Jordan. David Roberts made the sketches on the spot in 1839, and Louis Haghe turned them into color lithographs for *The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia*, issued in parts by F. G. Moon in London between 1842 and 1845. Roberts's trip came when Petra was almost unknown to European readers, so his views of its façades helped shape how the site was pictured for decades afterward.
