Carrying tobacco in Cuba shows a worker moving harvested leaf, the commodity that gave the island one of its most famous exports. Cuban tobacco had been prized abroad since the nineteenth century, and the leaf was typically gathered, bundled and transported by hand or by cart before curing and rolling. The picture comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, assembled by the American writer and photographer team who traveled widely and documented daily life around the world in the decades around 1900. Its date range, between 1890 and 1923, places it in the years when Cuba's tobacco trade was closely tied to American markets.
