A broken wall of tabby, a concrete-like mix of lime, sand, water, and crushed oyster shell, stands at St. Marys, a Georgia town on the Florida line. Colonial-era builders on the Atlantic coast poured this material into wooden forms, and its survival in such places shows how durable it was. Walker Evans dated the exposure to 1936, when he was photographing the worn-out buildings of the rural South. The 1974 copyright notice suggests the print was made decades after the picture was taken. The ruin shows how much of the region's early architecture survives only in fragments.
