Work on the new exhibition halls for the Exposition Universelle of 1900 transformed the Champs-Élysées area of Paris in the late 1890s, and A. Castaigne's oil painting, published in 1898, appears to record that effort. The title marks the location with a question mark, but the scaffolding and construction scene fit the district where the Grand Palais and Petit Palais were rising for the fair. Illustrated periodicals of the time often commissioned painters to document large public projects, and this scene shows the scale of building France undertook to display its industry and design to the world.
