Excavation for the foundation of Boulder Dam, shown here in a 1934 print from a portfolio compiled for Interior Secretary Harold L. Ickes, catches the work at its most basic stage: clearing and cutting into the canyon floor before any concrete could be poured. The portfolio, with photographs by B.D. Glaha of Boulder City, was meant to document the project's progress for the department that oversaw it. Work on the dam, later renamed Hoover Dam, was among the largest federal construction efforts of the Depression years, and images like this show the heavy equipment and crews that made the Colorado River crossing possible.
