The Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River in central Washington is the subject here, a structure that rose during the Great Depression and was built to hold back the river and generate hydroelectric power. Construction began in 1933 under the federal Bureau of Reclamation, and the dam was largely complete by the mid-1940s, when its generators began supplying electricity to the Pacific Northwest and helped power wartime industry. The record for this print is undated beyond a range of roughly a decade, and its caption card is old and unverified, so the exact moment it was taken is uncertain. Still, it captures one of the largest concrete undertakings of its era.
