Plate 80 of Diderot's pictorial encyclopedia turns to the practical work of building fortifications, combining hand tools, measured diagrams, and scenes of workers on site. The plates were prepared for the *Encyclopédie*, the French reference work whose volumes began appearing in 1751 and aimed to record trades and crafts in close detail. The caption card offers an early 18th-century date, but that date is unverified, so the engraved detail is the more reliable guide to how military construction was understood. Images like this were valued for showing how a fortification was laid out and raised, one step at a time.
