Ruth Chaney's 1937 lithograph takes the digging of a subway tunnel as its subject, a choice that sets it apart from the factories and steel mills that often stood for industry in prints of the period. Subway building was a major public undertaking in the 1930s, when cities such as New York were expanding their rail networks to ease crowded streets. The print is signed in pencil by the artist. It is worth looking at how it shows labor underground, where crews worked in confined spaces under artificial light.
