John Wise, the American aeronaut, is the figure this engraving sets out to present, and the print belongs to a board of ballooning images in which he appears as a central name. Wise (1808–1879) was a balloonist who promoted long-distance flight in the United States and proposed carrying mail and passengers across the Atlantic by balloon, an idea that drew wide public attention in the 1850s. The plate is an engraving by T.B. Welch made after a daguerreotype by M.A. Root, a combination that shows how portrait images moved from early photography into printed form. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year of publication remains unrecorded.
