An 1827 etching titled "Aerostatic vessel or aeronaut" focuses on the balloon and the person who flew it, using the period term for a craft that rose because it was lighter than the surrounding air. Balloon ascents had drawn crowds for about four decades by then, since the Montgolfier brothers flew in France in 1783, and printed images like this helped audiences picture both the machines and their pilots. The catalog record rests on an old caption card and has not been verified, so the exact maker and intended purpose remain uncertain. Even so, the sheet offers a useful glimpse of how early aeronautics was presented to the public.
