Goodland, the seat of Sherman County in far northwest Kansas, was a young railroad town in 1907, shaped by the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska line that had brought settlers to the high plains only a couple of decades earlier. Its economy rested on wheat, corn, and cattle raised on the surrounding homesteads, and grain moved out by rail to markets farther east. The region had been hit hard by drought in the early 1890s, and many families who stayed had learned to farm carefully on thin rainfall. In 1907 the town was still building out its streets, churches, and businesses, and residents would have measured their town by the trains that came through and the crops that filled the elevators.
