Ada, a small village in Hardin County in northwestern Ohio, was in 1922 a farm town whose fortunes rested largely on the surrounding grain and livestock country and on the campus at its edge. The school there had opened in 1871 as Ohio Normal University, a teacher-training college, and had taken the name Ohio Northern University in 1904. By the early 1920s it drew students from across the region, many of them future teachers, who arrived by rail and by road into a village of modest size. The years after the First World War brought returning veterans, enrollment pressures, and the national debate over Prohibition, which had taken effect in 1920. For the people of Ada, the university was the town's most visible institution and its chief point of civic pride.
