Bill Mauldin's drawing "Relics" takes its title from the attic and antiques it depicts, and its subject tags tie it to John F. Kennedy and the question of religion in politics. It appeared in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on May 12, 1960, two days after the West Virginia primary, a contest many observers treated as a test of whether a Catholic candidate could win over Protestant voters. Mauldin, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner for editorial cartooning, was known for blunt, plain-spoken commentary on American public life. The layered crayon, ink and white-out work gives the cluttered attic a texture worth studying up close.
