Yosemite Falls, the tallest waterfall in North America, is the subject here, and this albumen print dates to about 1865, only a few years after Congress granted the Yosemite Valley to the State of California for preservation in 1864. Photographers working in the valley at that time faced the challenge of hauling large glass-plate cameras over rough trails, and their mammoth-plate images gave eastern audiences their first detailed view of the valley's cliffs and cascades. Albumen prints like this one were the standard way such views reached the public in the 1860s, and the falls' dramatic drop is a useful reminder of how much effort it took to capture scenes of this scale.
