This lithograph honors John McCloskey, the New York churchman who became the first American cardinal in 1875, the same year Currier & Ives issued the print. He had been Archbishop of New York since 1864, and his elevation was a milestone for Catholicism in the United States. The New York firm sold inexpensive lithographs of public figures and events to a broad middle-class market, so this portrait shows how a religious leader was presented to ordinary American buyers.
