The title, "Heart of Jesus, reign thou ever in my heart," is a devotional petition drawn from the Sacred Heart tradition, which was widely practiced among Catholics in the United States by the 1870s. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued this lithograph around 1876, sold inexpensive color prints to a broad middle-class public, and its religious subjects reached homes, parlors, and church-related households alike. The print is catalogued in the firm's standard reference, the Gale Research catalog raisonné, where it is numbered 2996. Its modest format and popular publisher make it a useful example of how private faith was expressed through mass-produced images in the late nineteenth century.
