Ras el Abiad, the "white cape" on the Syrian coast, is the subject here, and David Roberts sketched it on April 26, 1839, during his long journey through the Near East. The headland sits north of the Holy Land proper, along the stretch of Mediterranean shore that travelers passed on the way between Palestine and Beirut. Louis Haghe turned Roberts's on-site drawing into this color lithograph for the second volume of *The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia*, issued in London in parts between 1842 and 1845. The plates in that series did much to shape European images of the region in the nineteenth century, so this view is valuable both as a record of the coastline and as an example of the period's taste for landscape travel prints.
