The view looks out over the city from the top of the Washington Monument, the obelisk that rose on the National Mall in the nineteenth century. Around 1900 the monument was still a relatively new sight, finished in 1884 after decades of delays caused by funding disputes and the Civil War. From that height a visitor could look across the Mall toward the Capitol and the surrounding streets, and photographs like this one let viewers see how sparse the capital still was compared with today. The print is valuable as a record of Washington's early skyline at the turn of the century.
