The view looks out over the city from the top of the Washington Monument, a vantage that was only open to visitors for a relatively short window in the early twentieth century. The monument was finished in 1884 and opened to the public soon after, with visitors reaching the observation room by a steam-powered elevator and, earlier, by climbing the stairs. Photographs taken from its height, such as this one from around 1900, record a Washington still laid out on a grid of broad avenues with the Mall stretching toward the Capitol, before the taller buildings of later decades changed the skyline.
