The view looks out over the city from the top of the Washington Monument, the obelisk that rose on the National Mall as a memorial to George Washington. Work on the monument began in 1848, stalled during the years of financial trouble and the Civil War, and was finally completed in 1884, when it was dedicated and opened to visitors. By about 1900, when this print was made, the tall marble shaft had become one of the city's defining landmarks, and an elevator and an observation room near the top drew tourists eager to see the spread of avenues, government buildings and open grounds below.
