Few advertisements of the 1890s are as recognizable as Alphonse Mucha's poster for Job, a French brand of cigarette papers. Mucha, a Czech-born artist who rose to fame in Paris with his theatrical posters for Sarah Bernhardt in 1894, gave this small paper product a graceful female figure with flowing hair and decorative framing, turning an everyday item into an elegant image. The poster was printed in color by F. Champenois, one of Paris's leading lithography firms, and it shows how advertisers of the period used fine art styles to sell goods to a broad public.
