The beamed ceiling and hearth of this kitchen belong to the Paul Revere House in Boston's North End, the oldest surviving dwelling in downtown Boston and now part of Boston National Historical Park. The house dates to about 1680 and was home to Revere, the silversmith and patriot famous for his 1775 midnight ride, though the kitchen shown here reflects its earlier colonial-era use more than his own household. Iron pots hung and stood at the open hearth, which was where cooking, heating and much daily work took place in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century homes. Look closely at the hand-hewn beams and the blackened brick, which show how these rooms were built and used.
