The name of this 1890 poster points to the "bench show," the term for a dog show in which animals were judged while standing on raised benches, and the New England Kennel Club was one of the organizations that ran such events in the late nineteenth century. The American kennel club movement was growing quickly then, with breed standards and formal judging becoming central to the sport. Posters like this one advertised these shows to the public and often pictured a range of breeds side by side, so the image doubles as a snapshot of which dogs were fashionable and how they were presented to city audiences.
