A color lithograph of Stonewall Jackson's boyhood home on the West Fork River in Lewis County, West Virginia, places the Confederate general in a rural setting rather than on the battlefield. Jackson was born in Clarksburg in 1824, and after his father died when he was two, he spent much of his youth in this part of the state. Printed around 1889, about a quarter century after his death at Chancellorsville in 1863, the picture reflects the postwar interest in Jackson as a symbol of Southern heroism and the homestead roots that memorial art often emphasized.
