A low stone slab shelter sits on a rocky outcrop, with autumn-colored hills falling away behind it, a view that shows how closely the built landscape here follows the ridges and river gaps of the Blue Ridge. Harper's Ferry, where the Shenandoah meets the Potomac, has long been a crossroads for travel, trade and industry, and it was the site of John Brown's 1859 raid on the federal armory. Its surrounding hills were fought over repeatedly during the Civil War. Hillside views like this one helped shape the area's later preservation as a national historical park.
