Harper's Ferry, shown here in 1863, sits where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet, a position that made it strategically valuable during the Civil War. The town's federal armory had been a major producer of military arms before 1861, and the place changed hands several times in 1862 and 1863 as armies moved through the Shenandoah Valley. Photographs from these years often record damaged buildings, rail lines and earthworks, and they show how the town looked after prolonged occupation and fighting.
