Zachary Taylor is the only man standing in this 1849 daguerreotype, while his cabinet sits around him. The sitting came in Taylor's first year as president, after his March inauguration, when a Whig administration was assembling its government and a career army officer with no prior political experience was learning the job. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's Washington studio, which was then photographing many prominent Americans. Gold toning, applied to the silver surface of the plate, sharpens the image and helps protect it from tarnish.
