The title names Marsena Rudolph Patrick, who in 1863 served as provost marshal for the Army of the Potomac, the office responsible for military police and camp discipline. Gambling was a constant problem in Union camps, where soldiers wagered on cards and dice during long stretches of idle time, and commanders tried a range of punishments to stop it. This small drawing, made in pencil and white paint on olive-tinted paper, records one such method in October 1863. Its modest size and quick, sketch-like handling make it a useful glimpse of how the war's discipline was imagined and recorded at the time.
