Shown in a formal head-and-shoulders pose and looking straight at the viewer, this portrait presents Harry Houdini at about fifty, a deliberate contrast to the daring escape photographs that made his name. Around 1924 he was taking on a more serious public role, writing and lecturing against fraudulent spiritualist mediums, and this dignified image suits his effort to be taken as an authority. The color halftone was a comparatively elaborate printing process for the 1920s, which makes this sober portrait worth noticing as a product of the period's print trade.
