Titled *Dead broke*, this 1873 lithograph uses a slang phrase meaning to have no money at all, and the title hints at the ruin that heavy drinking could bring. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued it, produced inexpensive lithographs in large numbers for a mass market, and its genre scenes of saloons, drinking and temperance were popular subjects. The print appears as number 1594 in *Currier & Ives: A catalog Raisonné*, compiled by Gale Research, a standard reference for tracing the firm's output.
