Champagne and cigars make an unusual pairing, yet this 1876 calendar uses both to promote G.H. Mumm & Co. and Key West segars. The Champagne house had been founded in Reims, France, in 1827, and by the 1870s its wines were well known in America. Key West was then a busy center of cigar making, with workers rolling tobacco largely imported from Cuba. Calendars like this one hung in shops and offices, keeping the advertiser's name in view for a full year.
