Durant, in what was then Indian Territory, is the setting for this view of Theodore Roosevelt speaking to a crowd and urging residents to prepare for statehood. The region was moving toward joining Oklahoma Territory as a single state, a process Congress approved in 1906 and that produced Oklahoma in 1907. The scene reflects the whistle-stop style of campaigning that carried presidents by train to small towns, and the stereograph format, which pairs two nearly identical views for viewing through a lens, gave viewers a sense of being present at the event.
