Chauncey Mitchell Depew sits in this half-length view turned to the left, a pose that gives the face a clear, sharp profile. By the time the portrait was made around 1901, Depew was among the best-known men in New York, having long led the New York Central Railroad and entered the U.S. Senate in 1899. He was equally famous as a lawyer and as a witty after-dinner speaker, so his public image rested as much on personality as on politics. The print carries a copyright line in the name of photographer Theodore C. Marceau.
