Few towns sit on opposite banks of the Missouri as closely as McLaughlin and Mobridge, and this postcard shows the bridge that linked them, with Mobridge rising in the distance. The crossing carried the Yellowstone Trail, a transcontinental auto route that promoted good roads and gave small Dakota towns a place on a national map. Cards like this were a popular way for motorists in the 1920s to record a river crossing. The bridge shows how early motor tourism reshaped the way travelers moved across the Plains.
