Although the gallery board lists Theodore Roosevelt, the August 1936 date points to Franklin D. Roosevelt, who toured drought-stricken areas of the northern Plains that summer during his reelection campaign. The picture shows the president visiting a farmer in Mandan, North Dakota, who was receiving federal drought relief, aid meant to help farmers hold on to their land after years of failed crops and dust storms. The image survives as a nitrate negative, a format common in the 1930s that is chemically unstable and needs careful storage.
