Chatham sits at the elbow of Cape Cod, where the peninsula bends westward, and this bird's-eye view shows the harbor, the outer sandbars and the open water of Nantucket Sound in one oblique sweep. Panoramic maps like this one let viewers take in a whole town at once, as if looking down from a hilltop. The Cape's shifting sandbars made its waters dangerous to shipping, a constant concern for the mariners and fishermen who depended on the coast. The drawing lets viewers trace how the harbor and town streets sit against the surrounding dunes.
