This engraving is less a view of the gap itself than a map of the footpaths that carried visitors from the hotels to its principal lookouts in Monroe County, Pennsylvania. It appeared opposite the title page of Luke W. Brodhead's 1867 book *The Delaware Water Gap*, where it would have oriented readers before they reached the text. By the 1860s the gap, where the Delaware River cuts through the Kittatinny Ridge, had become a popular summer destination reachable by rail, and a map of walking routes helped tourists find the scenery that drew them there.
