The subject is Rebecca's Well and its cascade, a small falls tucked into the wooded slopes near the Delaware Water Gap, where the river cuts through the Kittatinny Ridge. Its January 1862 date places it in the first winter of the Civil War, a season when the mountain resorts and sightseeing parties of the earlier decades had thinned out. Views like this one, with bare trees and cold water, were valued by 19th-century visitors who came to the Gap for its scenery. Winter scenes like this one also show the place without its summer crowds.
