This poster announces the public programs of the Federal Art Project, a New York-based unit of the Works Progress Administration that employed artists during the Depression. Its subject is the exhibitions the project organized in New York, and the poster itself was printed by silkscreen, a process the project's poster workshops adopted because it was inexpensive and could produce bold flat color in quantity. The date stamped on the back, June 1939, shows the sheet was handled and filed well after it was first printed in 1936. Posters like this one were meant to draw crowds to galleries and community events, and they are now valued as examples of how New Deal arts programs reached ordinary city residents.
