This picture groups work by three artists, Yvonne Twining, Waldo Kaufer and Albert Gold, all identified as WPA painters. The Works Progress Administration was the New Deal agency that employed artists from 1935 to 1943 through its Federal Art Project, which commissioned easel paintings, murals and prints for public buildings and institutions. Its Boston listing ties the material to the city's Depression-era cultural life. Such work was meant to reach ordinary citizens, and its focus on regional subjects and everyday scenes gives it lasting documentary value.
