Labeled "Walter Reed, Christmas story," this glass negative takes its title from data the National Photo Company recorded on the negative or its sleeve, a source the Library of Congress describes as unverified. Walter Reed was the Army physician whose yellow fever work in Cuba changed how the disease was controlled, so the name points toward Army life in the early twentieth century, though the record does not explain the connection. The National Photo Company worked in Washington, D.C., from about 1907 to 1932, and its plates offer a record of the city in those years. Expect streaks and blemishes, which come from natural deterioration of the original coatings.
