Titled "Christmas story," this glass negative came from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm that recorded street scenes, public life and local events in the early twentieth century. The record dates it to 1923 or 1924, based on neighboring negatives, and the title comes from unverified notes on the negative or its sleeve. Herbert A. French gave the plate to the Library of Congress in 1947. Glass negatives of this period often developed streaks and coating loss over time, so the faint marks across the surface are part of the object's physical history.
