A Christmas tree photographed alongside a man identified only as "Secty. Davis" is what sets this picture apart, though that title is unverified data written on the negative or its sleeve. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio, made the image, and its work documented government offices, officials and city life in the early twentieth century. The 1921 date places it in the first year of the Harding administration, and the glass plate shows the streaks and blemishes that come with age in its original coatings, which are worth noticing as you look at the tree and the room around it.
